  1. Blood donations ( intermediate)

Vocabulary 

  • means (noun): way or method of doing something 
    – What is the best 
    means of helping other people in the community?
  • donate (verb): give something freely 
    – My father always 
    donates money and items to the homeless shelter in our area.
  • eligible (adjective): having the right to do something 
    – Children who come from low-income families are 
    eligible to receive free lunches at school.
  • register (verb): sign up for something 
    – How about 
    registering to donate blood next month? It’s a great way to serve the community.
  • consider (verb): think about 
    – I 
    considered volunteering my time to help children learn how to read at the library, but our family moved before I had a chance.


  1. Airport announcement (difficult)

Vocabulary: 

  • inclement (adjective): severe 
    – The game was canceled due to 
    inclement weather.
  • crew (noun): an organized group of workers 
    The ship’s 
    crew were very helpful during the cruise.
  • deice (verb): make or become free of frost or ice, defrost 
    – You need to 
    deice the windshield this morning. It dropped below freezing last night.
  • overbook (verb): too many seats, for example, have been reserved in advance
    – Airlines tend to 
    overbook seats on their flights which can be an inconvenience to some passengers.
  • complimentary (adjective): free, gratuitous
    This hotel provides a 
    complimentary breakfast for all its guests.
  • board (noun): to get on an aircraft, ship, train, bus, etc. 
    – We should 
    board the train at least ten minutes before departure.

Cosmetic surgery (very difficult)

Vocabulary : 

  • evoke (verb): bring up, call to mind 
    – Seeing children in need of reconstructive surgery often 
    evokes feelings of sympathy and concern.
  • alter (verb): change 
    – The woman thought she could 
    alter her looks and personality by undergoing plastic surgery.
  • congenital (adjective): present at birth 
    – Some 
    congenital defects can be corrected with reconstructive surgery.
  • disfigurements (noun, also a verb, “disfigure”): a part of the body that has been damaged
    – The fire in the crash left her face and hands 
    disfigured, and now she is seeking cosmetic surgery to repair the damage and give her more mobility to her fingers.
  • afford (verb): have the financial means to do something
    – A great number of people around the world are in need of reconstructive surgery to improve their lives, but they can’t 
    afford the expense of such procedures.
  • self-sufficient (adjective): able to provide for your own needs
    – Many health care workers in developing countries are still learning to become 
    self-sufficient in terms of handling the medical needs of their people.
  • ostracize (verb): expel or cast out from a group
    – The local community 
    ostracized the young boy and his family because of his medical condition.
